Message From Mr Sutherland

As we reach the end of an extremely busy autumn term and I reflect on the past four months,  I look back on how much has been achieved already.  Not only have we ensured that the children are supported and challenged academically, but we have continued to provide all the other aspects of an holistic education that are so important and at which I believe Dunston Hill Community Primary excels.

It’s a real team effort here at Dunston Hill and all that we do and achieve wouldn’t be possible without our fantastic team of staff who go above and beyond every single day and continually strive for ever higher standards.  This leaves us a position to deliver the best possible educational and pastoral provision for your children.

I would like to extend my thanks to all the children, parents and carers for your support of our school this year.  Look out for more exciting initiatives in spring and summer terms and, as always, we will keep you informed via letters, our newsletter #DUNSTONHILL, our website and our Facebook page so please make sure you refer to them regularly.  Don’t forget also to give us your constructive feedback and let us know how we are doing.  Any comments or suggestions are most welcome.

It just remains for me, on behalf of all the staff and governors, to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.  Remember that school is closed to pupils on Monday 6th January as our staff will be receiving training on that day.  We will see you all again on Tuesday 7th January 2020, when school will open to pupils at the usual times.

Happy Christmas everyone!

Christmas Visit to Church

On Tuesday we took all our children from Reception to Year 6 down to St Nicholas Church for a very special Christmas service with Reverend Atkinson. This is always a very special event in our Christmas calendar as we manage to fit all our children into the church to celebrate together. The children sang songs, read a poem and a reading, we had some excellent soloists perform on their guitars and together were able to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Mr Sutherland ended our service with the whole school joining together to share our motto #bemorekind and sing “We wish you a Merry Christmas”.

A reminder we open for children on Tuesday 7th January 2020.

School Lunch

The menu for week commencing Monday 6 January is Week 1.  A reminder that as part of our Healthy Schools programme, we ask that children do not bring crisps, chocolate or fizzy drinks in their packed lunches.  Due to allergies, please ensure that no kiwi fruit or peanuts are brought into school, including in the form of Snickers or peanut butter sandwiches.  This is especially important to remember for children bringing in packed lunches or snacks.

Class News

This week’s Class News is from Lower Key Stage 2…

Over the past two weeks, Year 4 have worked on a new English unit based around ‘The Polar Express’. We watched short clips of the film to help us come up with powerful phrases and develop a rich vocabulary. We then wrote a diary entry as if we were the young boy in the film and described how we felt when the train first arrived. To finish off our unit, we all gathered in our pyjamas and sat as if we were on board the train.  We watched the film and enjoyed chocolate milk and other refreshments whilst doing so.  Miss Conway and Miss Whaley are delighted with the quality of the children’s work.

‘The delicate snowflakes frantically fluttered from the midnight sky to form a duvet of snow.’ – Mila, 4C

‘Lights glistened through my room like Rudolph’s nose, then my room began to shake incessantly. My palms were sweating I leapt up and grabbed my dressing gown.’ – Eleanor, 4W
