Nursery – Friday 3rd July

Good Morning! It’s happy Friday!! I hope you had lots of fun singing and dancing yesterday.  We love to sing and dance in Nursery. We’ll do some more singing and dancing today, just like we normally do on a Friday in our lovely Nursery. Today’s 3pm Facebook post comes from the lovely Mrs Cox and she has something from Forest School to share with you! As a gorgeous treat today, we have the ‘Dunston Hill’s Got Talent’ video of some of our very talented children! Enjoy!

RWI Phonics:

Today’s sound is ‘x’. Lets bonce this sound!

Phonics activity: Eye spy x!

Today can you spot the letter x in the picture above? How many can you see? Each time you see one can you make the sound?

As a challenge! We normally hear this sound at the end of a word, sing along with Ben and Andy, can you hear todays sound?

Talent week task – whole school

Have you enjoyed this week so far?  Well we have saved the best until last…. This afternoon we would like you to cosy up with your family and watch our ‘Dunston Hill’s Got Talent’ video!

https://youtu.be/5KZ7TL8pqhE

After watching the video, we would like you to choose a skill that one of your friends shared, and practise this for yourself!  Will you decide to bake something?  What about learning a magic trick?  Could you learn a dance?  Surprise us!  Alternatively, you could choose a talent that you are interested in and carry out some research.

An additional activity – Lots of grownups and children have enjoyed creating pieces of art as a way of relaxing so option 2 is over to you to show us your art skills. Choose an art medium – pencil, paint, modelling clay/playdough, collage …. and create a masterpiece for our website gallery.

We would love to hear what you get up to, so please share lots of photographs in our Facebook comments.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week as much as we have! 😊 What a talented bunch of children and adults we have here at Dunston Hill. 😊

Story time:

Let’s dance together again, this time with lots of animals in the story ‘Doing the Animal Bop’. This is a story, but a story you can dance too! Enjoy!

Reception

Reception – Friday 3rd July

Good Morning Reception! We hope you’re all well. We’ve made it to another Friday! We hope you’re looking forward to visiting school next Wednesday to collect your reports and have a chat and chance to say goodbye to your teachers. We’re really looking forward to seeing you all.

Today’s activities:

Phonics:

Set one of the day is: x

Set two sound is: ay (sounds starting again)

RWI Read and Hold a sentence 1 continue today. This activity encourages reading and writing practice for children reading set 1 sounds confidently and learning Set 2 sounds.

Please take a look on the RWI home learning You Tube link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

An alternative activity: All you need today is some paper and cups or milk bottle tops will work too. Ask your grown up to write sounds in the circles and see if you can use the cups or the bottle tops to build words.

Writing:

It is hard work looking after vegetable patch. Can you write labels and draw pictures to show what you think Oliver’s Grandad had to do to grow his vegetables?

Maths:

Today we are helping Oliver to make a milkshake but now his friends are coming too so we need to double the ingredients. Can you help him? Follow the link to look at the recipe. https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Day-5-Olivers-Vegetables.pdf

After you have looked at the recipe what about making your own milkshake. What will you put in it? We would love to see your pictures!

After why don’t you have a go at measuring some of the furniture in your house using a vegetable as a unit. All you need to do is pick a vegetable and off you go. See if you can write a list like bed = 8 carrots. Happy measuring!!

Talent Week Activities:

Good afternoon everyone!  Have you enjoyed this week so far?  Well we have saved the best until last…. This afternoon we would like you to cosy up with your family and watch our ‘Dunston Hill’s Got Talent’ video! This time it’s not the staff in school but the children! Year 1

Year 1 Friday 3rd July

Happy Friday, Year 1! 🌞 It was so wonderful to see so many of you yesterday! We loved catching up with you all! 🌈

Today’s tasks:
Maths –
It’s Friday so that means…. it’s Numbots day! We would like you to log on to Numbots and continue your Numbot journey. How far will you get today?! Remember, accuracy is important, so make sure you concentrate!

Here are some other ideas you might like to try today to continue developing your money skills:

  • The Topmarks money game, which offers sorting, ordering and counting in coins: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/coins-game
  • Shopping role play! Get your grown-up to give you a budget and set prices for some objects in your house. What can you buy? Which coins could you use?
  • Coin caterpillars! Get a grown-up to make a ‘coin caterpillar’ – can you work out its total? Can you create your own coin caterpillar for your grownup and see if their total is correct?
    (This coin caterpillar is American!)
  • Coin rubbings. Place the coins beneath the paper and use pencils to rub over the top of them. Once you’ve done this, can you match the coins to their rubbing?

We would love to see your work in the comments below 😊

English –
RWInc. Time!
As of 1st June, all speed sounds lessons are available from 9.30am. Those children in Set 2 and Set 3 groups have new words for reading. All sets have red words (tricky words) to practise. These are slightly further down the page.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

Miss Thompson’s group – Set 1 and Red Words 1
Mrs O’Hara and Mrs Harm’s groups – Set 2and Red Words 1
Miss Bunce, Miss Jobey and Mrs Neve’s groups – Set 3 and Red Words 2

If you think your child is very confident recognising and reading the sounds in the set they have been practising, we suggest they try the next set of sounds. For any children who are very confident with Set 3 sounds, there is a video called ‘Read Longer Words’ which they can practise.
This week’s story is……. ‘Sharing a Shell’ by Julia Donaldson. If you don’t have the story at home, you can watch it on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpJumAZx1t8 How are you enjoying it? 🦀

Today, we are going to be thinking about the rockpool, which is the habitat where the three sea creatures live. Have you ever seen a rockpool before? What did it look like? What did you find?

We would like you to put your research skills into action today and find out what other sea creatures like to live there. You can use the kid safe search engine Kiddle https://www.kiddle.co/. You might like to draw a picture of it and then write a sentence to explain, or create a fact file about one of the creatures you might find there! We can’t wait to see!

Afternoon
Today is our final day of Talent Week!  We have loved seeing how talented you all are this week! What a wonderful bunch we have in Year 1! We have saved the best until last…. This afternoon we would like you to cosy up with your family and watch our ‘Dunston Hill’s Got Talent’ video! WOW!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KZ7TL8pqhE&feature=youtu.be

What a talented bunch of children and adults we have here at Dunston Hill.

Reading
Reading is an excellent way to help you to relax, as well as being an important skill to develop. See if a grown-up will read a favourite story to you, or you might be able to access some online stories to enjoy! This website has lots of books you can see and hear being read to you: https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/
Remember, you can select a reading book just like you’d get in school to keep reading books at the appropriate phonic level; this is outlined in an email sent the 27th April 📚
Happy reading!

🌈 Have a fantastic weekend everyone, take care! 🌈
Miss Bunce and Miss Thompson x

Year 2

Happy Friday, Year 2! We are at the end of another week and we hope that this weekend is going to be full of fun for you all. A huge thank you to everyone who has posted pictures or sent us their work this week – as always, it makes our day to see it! We also hope that you have enjoyed Talent Show week and have learned something new.

We would like to remind you that our ‘Goodbye Year 2’ day is on Monday 6th July. There is more information about this at the bottom of our post!

Let’s wake up today with Joe Wicks – we wonder who he is going to be dressed up as today?

Daily tasks –

Maths – Our final maths activity of the week is linked to your work on comparing volumes yesterday. Remember that capacity is the maximum amount of liquid a container can hold. Volume is the amount it is actually holding. Today, you will be measuring in millilitres – this is a unit of measure used to measure liquids.

Follow this link https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/ and click on ‘Summer Term – Week 10 (w/c 29th July)’ and then ‘Lesson 4 – Millilitres.’ Watch the video and then open the worksheet (which is attached here Lesson 4 – Milliltres). There is also top tips sheet to help you attached here Top tips for measuring in millilitres to help you with some of the questions if you need it.

When you’re done and if you have a measuring jug at home, challenge yourself to fill it to different amounts in millilitres. For example, can you fill 200ml? How about 500ml? What about a really tricky 750ml?

As an extra activity, when you’re done, why not try this game  http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/capacity/index.html Select ‘answers in steps of 10ml’ when you follow the link so that each interval on the scale will be 10ml.

English – Today is spelling day and we think you are really going to enjoy what we have planned. We are going to learn how to make and spell compound words. When two words fit together to make a new word, this is known as a compound word. E.g. snow + man = snowman. Click on this link to watch an introduction to compound words.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zcgv39q/articles/z38t6fr

When you have watched the clip, scroll down to complete the quiz and complete the other activities on this website page. Next, complete the matching activity sheet to make compound words, which is attached here Matching activity to make compound words.

Would you like a final challenge? See how many compound words you can come up with where the first part of the word is:

  • rain
  • sun
  • tooth

We would love to see how many compound words you come up with. Have fun!

Phonics – All phonics videos can be viewed from 10.30am by following this link:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

Join in with the speed sound lesson and the word time spelling lesson as well. Remember to tick or fix! Choose Set 3 sounds video if you have an orange, yellow, blue or grey reading book. If you have a green, purple or pink reading book, choose Set 2 sounds video.

There are videos added for reading red words too. For those who have a green, purple, pink and orange reading book, read red words 1. For those who have a yellow, blue and grey reading book, read red words 2. If you can’t logon, then you can find green words and red words at the back of your reading diaries.

If you do not read ‘Read Write Inc’ reading books, there is a video for you to watch all about reading longer words.

Afternoon –

Good afternoon everyone!  Have you enjoyed this week so far?  Well we have saved the best until last…. This afternoon we would like you to cosy up with your family and watch our ‘Dunston Hill’s Got Talent’ video! Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KZ7TL8pqhE&feature=youtu.be

An additional activity

Lots of grownups and children have enjoyed creating pieces of art as a way of relaxing so option 2 is over to you to show us your art skills. Choose an art medium – pencil, paint, modelling clay or playdough, collage …. and create a masterpiece for our website gallery. We would love to hear what you get up to, so please share lots of photographs in our Facebook comments.

We hope that you have enjoyed this week as much as we have! 😊 What a talented bunch of children and adults we have here at Dunston Hill. 😊

Take a look at our 3pm post today, with Mrs Cox!

Reading – Over the weekend, why not listen to a few chapters of ‘The Boy who Grew Dragons’ – we are around half way through the story and we’re sure that some of you are wanting to know what happens! Follow this link for chapter 14 and then continue to click on the chapters to listen to more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NooIo8lG1QY&list=PLd5OvpigUuUH6xXqFd8QfUQdD4RT1uFYr&index=17

If you’ve just finished a book recently, why not write a review for it? You could rate it out of five stars, write or tell someone a brief summary of the storyline and the main characters. You might give someone else an idea of what to read next!

Important date – Monday 6th July

Please don’t forget that we will both be in school on Monday 6th July, along with Mrs Gaulton and Mrs Harm, for our ‘goodbye Year 2.’ We are bursting with excitement and we would love it if we could see as many of you as possible! You have received an email, which tells you the time slot for you to come to so that we can keep everyone safe! If you have any reading books, please bring them along to return them.

Have a great weekend, Year 2. We hope to see lots of you on Monday!

From Mrs Bainbridge and Miss Jobey

Year 3

Today’s tasks:

Maths – Click onto the link https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Y3-Week-7-Alternative-Plan.pd  and go to the fourth lesson – Compare lengths. Today, you will need to remember the key facts which you have already learnt from the previous lessons – 100cm is equal to 1m and 10mm Is equal to 1cm. Watch the video carefully, the teacher will model how to convert the measurements to help you compare them. Pause the video when you are told to, for you to have a go. Once you have watched the video, complete the questions in the activity. Remember these are attached in your email and below:

Lesson 4 – Compare lengths 2019

English – Today we’ve set you two tasks on Purple Mash to help you finish off your work on information writing. One of them is a word-level task where you need to use all the work you’ve done on adjectives, adverbs as openers and relative clauses to describe nine animals (one sentence each). There is a little information on each animal when you hover over their names or you can simply describe their appearance. The other task will help you to apply all those skills some more by writing an information text about Newcastle! You might already know a lot about Newcastle or you could ask your family or even research on the internet to help you.

Afternoon

Good afternoon everyone!  Have you enjoyed this week so far?  Well we have saved the best until last…. This afternoon we would like you to cosy up with your family and watch our ‘Dunston Hill’s Got Talent’ video!

https://youtu.be/5KZ7TL8pqhE

After watching the video, we would like you to choose a skill that one of your friends shared, and practise this for yourself!  Will you decide to bake something?  What about learning a magic trick?  Could you learn a dance?  Surprise us!  Alternatively, you could choose a talent that you are interested in and carry out some research.

Option 2: Lots of grownups and children have enjoyed creating pieces of art as a way of relaxing so option 2 is over to you to show us your art skills.

Year 4

Year 4 – Friday 3rd July

Happy Friday everyone!  Thank you for working your socks off again this week, we are so proud of each and every one of you.  We can’t wait to see you all today, please let us know as soon as possible if you have not received a time slot.  Remember that we are not on Teams this morning, but you can still use it to discuss the tasks with your friends.  Let’s find out what we have planned for our final day of ‘Dunston’s Got Talent Week’…

We have not put down set times as we know that you all have different time slots, so you can complete the tasks at a time that suits you.

Maths – Welcome to another one of our times table sessions.  Today we are going to focus on division.

Activity 1: Warm up your brains by spending some time playing this division game.  Read the information at the top of the screen to find out which number you are dividing by, and then hover over the blocks and click once the correct answer appears.  If you would like to change your answer, click on the block again.  To access the game, click on the link belowyou might need to open this through Internet Explorer rather than Google Chrome, depending on your flash player.
http://www.crickweb.co.uk/ks2numeracy-division.html

Activity 2: Choose a game of your choice to practise your division facts:
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/mental-maths-train
Purple Mash – Dividers game
Times Table Rock Stars

Activity 3: Create a division poster to display in your room.
We have mastered our multiplication facts, so now we would like you to build up your speed when recalling division facts.  You could create a giant poster to include division facts from all times tables (up to the 12x table) or you could choose a times table which you are not as confident with.  Remember to make your poster bright and colourful, you could choose to include a particular theme, for example: rainbows.

English – Today we are going to practise spelling our Year 3 / 4 Common Exception Words.  We have sent another copy of these words through email; in case you no longer have the copy which we sent home at the beginning of lockdown.  We would like you to begin by reading through the list to a grown up in your house, if there are any which you are struggling to read, then make a note of them and ask your grown up to keep quizzing you throughout the day.  Now we would like you to choose 10 of these words to practise spelling.  You can choose to do this any way you like, you could get very creative and paint these words, write them in play-dough, sand, using water on the path, or you could use the letters in alphabet spaghetti… You decide!  We would love to see a photograph of you learning your spellings in a creative way.

Year 6

Good Morning Year 6! 💙💛

To access your resources today for all of your learning you need to:

  1. Log into Teams
  2. Go to Files (at the top of the page)
  3. Select Class Materials
  4. Select SUMMER TERM SECOND HALF
  5. Select WEEK 5
  6. Select the subject (Maths, English, Guided Reading)
  7. Select the day – Friday

Maths:

Today we are going to begin as we do in class, with Arithmetic. Open the Flashback and complete the questions in your red maths book, the ANSWERS are also attached to self-assess your work and make any necessary corrections.

For the main lesson, we are revising how we multiply fractions by whole numbers. Open the True or False pdf and see if you can answer the question – is it true or false? The answer is on the second page.

Next, there is an informative video for you to watch using the following link: https://vimeo.com/415879394

which will help you complete today’s task. You can access the task by either opening the ‘multiply fractions by integers’ PowerPoint and completing the questions in your red maths book OR you can open the ‘multiply fractions by integers’ task pdf and print off the questions. When you have completed the task, open the ‘multiply fractions by integers’ answers pdf and self-assess

English:

This week is SPaG week! There are 5 tasks for you to choose from. If you are in school you only need to complete 3 day’s worth of tasks – you can choose from any of the days. These are all SPaG areas you have covered in school before – great revision ready for secondary school! Please use your blue jotter to record your work 😊

Day 1 – Select the correct relative pronoun to create sentences with relative clauses. The instructions and an example are on the sheet. Please don’t forget to use a comma!

Day 2 – Recognising non-standard English. Look at the verbs to help you for this activity. For example: ‘I done my homework’ is non-standard English. It should be either, ‘I have done my homework.’ or ‘I did my homework.’

Day 3 – Determiners. A determiner comes before a noun and tells you something about the noun. For example: the number of something or who owns something. E.g ‘There were thirty children.’ Thirty is the determiner as it tells us how many children. ‘Our classroom was stifling hot.’ Our is the determiner.

Day 4 – Prepositions. There are 3 types of preposition: those that tell us the time something happened e.g before or at noon, those that tell us where something is e.g behind or under and those that are causal e.g because of or due to the fact. There are three activities to complete today and the answers are on the final sheet. If you would like to challenge yourself miss our activity 2 and only do 1 and 3.

Day 5 – Semi-colons. A semi colon is used to join to main clauses together that are linked to each other. A semi colon can often replace a conjunction. For example: ‘Mrs Moorhead likes dogs and she has one called Lola.’ We replace ‘and’ with a semi colon. ‘Mrs Moorhead likes dogs; she has one called Lola.’

Reading:

Additionally this week we have the following texts to choose from and we encourage you to answer the comprehension questions too. Remember the answers are on the last page. This week’s theme is Chocolate – YUM!

  • Melting Chocolate
  • Droolz Delivers New Delight
  • Aztec Chocolate
  • Bournville
  • Wish Bar

Remember you can always use your time to work on Reading Plus too!
