Nursery

Nursery – Thursday 2nd July

Good Morning Nursery – it’s Thursday! There’s lots going on for ‘Talent Week’ this week – don’t forget to share your pictures too! Did you see Mrs Cassidy yesterday on the 3 pm post? She made a very cute icing pig. Today’s 3pm post is Mr Sutherland! We hope you are ready for lots of singing and dancing today.

RWI Phonics:

Today’s sound is ‘z’. Let’s hear how you can stretch this sound!

YouTube Ruth Miskin Training website:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

Phonics activity: Eye spy with my little eye, can you spot something beginning with z?

For today’s phonics activity we would like to look at the picture at the top of the post, can you spot the pictures that have z at the start of the word? I wonder if you can ‘eye spy’ any other words that start with a ‘z’ sound?

As an extra challenge can you also find some words that start with the other sounds we have been learning, they’re hiding!

Maths activity: Number Blocks

We love the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’, today the Number Blocks are telling the story of the ‘The Three Little Pigs!’

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08cqtk0/numberblocks-series-1-three-little-pigs

In the story Number Blocks 1 and 2 have a lovely tea party, they had enough cups and plates for everyone. Could you have a tea party, but make sure you have enough for each person! How many cups will you need?  How many plates will you need? What else could you have for your tea party? We would love to see your photos!

Talent week task – whole school:

Our themes today are music, singing and dancing… And we know that there are some fabulous musicians and dancers amongst you!  We would like you to learn another new skill!

Option 1: Dancing

Put your dancing shoes on and let’s dance!  We know that you lot love a disco so today the dance floor is yours!

There are so many different styles of dance, so you might choose your favourite or you could choose to learn a new style.  We would like you to watch a video to learn some moves and then put together your own dance routine.  Below are some links to help you get started:

Option 2: Singing

We have a feel that this option will be a popular choice!  You all know how to sing, so what about learning a new song?  We would like you to choose a song that you are unfamiliar with, you could ask a family member for suggestions, and learn the chorus.  We all know how much Mr Sutherland loves to sing and so today he has created a video for you to watch and join in with, click on the link below:

Option 3: Music

Your final option for today is related to music.  There are so many different styles of music and during Music week, we learned lots of different skills.  Today we are going to focus on beatboxing!  Beatboxing is making percussive noises with the mouth, lips, tongue and voice.  Performers try and imitate the sounds of a drum machine and it is used a lot in hip-hop music.  Use the following link to learn some of the basics and then try to put your own sounds together.

Have a lovely busy day Nursery! Let’s dance, dance, dance!!  Big smiles coming your way!  😊

Reception

Thursday 2nd July

Good morning Reception! It’s been lovely seeing your talents this week so please continue to share your videos and comments with us. We’re busy planning ideas for next week which will be our chance to do all the things we’ve loved to do in Reception. If you have any activities that you’ve loved then please let us know and we’ll do our best to plan them in too! 😊

Phonics: Set one sound of the say is: z

Set two sound of the day is: oy

RWI Read and Hold a sentence 1 continue today. This activity encourages reading and writing practice for children reading set 1 sounds confidently and learning Set 2 sounds.

Please take a look on the RWI home learning You Tube link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

An alternative activity:

Use some chalk and make a hopscotch outside. Instead of putting numbers can you put sounds or words. Throw a stone or conker to see where it lands. Do the hopscotch and say which word or sound the stone or conker landed on when you pick it up. You can change the words or sounds to different trickier ones by using water to wash them away and write over the top once it has dried.

Writing:

Can you find out about a fruit or vegetable that only grows in another country? You could look in books, on the internet, or talk to your grown up to find out. Write down a fact that you found out.

Maths:

Oliver has got a little muddled up with his counting today. He has put his fruit and crops in a basket but has put the wrong label on them. Can you help him by making new labels for the fruit and crops?

You might like to listen to ‘Kitchen Disco’ (we know you’ll love it). Here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeg0cNyaj7w. In the story the fruit have a disco. Today we would like you to think of your favourite songs to dance to at the disco. Write a list of your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Maybe you can get the fruit from your fruit bowl to dance along too! https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Day-4-Olivers-Vegetables.pdf

Mrs Cassidy and Miss Cavanagh

Year 1

Year 1 Thursday 2nd July
🌞 Morning! 🌞 Hope you are doing well! Today is a SUPER exciting day for those of us in Year 1 as today is our chance to see you all again! 🌈 We hope to see as many of you as possible at school today.

Today’s tasks:
Maths –
Continuing with our work on money, today, we are going to be counting in coins! Here is today’s lesson:
Summer Term – Week 10 (w/c 29th June) – Lesson 4
You need to click the video that says ‘Lesson 4 – Countinin coins’
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/

Just like earlier in the weekif you have any coins in your house that you can look at and use, that would be great! Remember to think carefully about the value of the coin. You will be able to use some of your counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to help you!

As always, you can pause or rewatch as often as you like! Once you have watched the video and you feel happy to, give the worksheets a go! There are images on Facebook and the PDF is on the website and in the email sent to you.
Lesson-4-Counting-in-coins (1)

If your child needs extra practice with recognising coins and you have some at home, you could try sorting them by their value and ordering them. Mix them all up – how many 5ps are there? How many 20ps? Drawing round coins is also a lovely activity to help children familiarise themselves with the look, shape and feel of coins, as well as their value. Role playing a shopping situation is also great to recognising and counting in coins!

Topmarks also has a great game, which offers sorting, ordering and counting in coins:
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/coins-game

Extra Challenge

This is a tricky one, but give it your best try!

We would love to see your work in the comments below 😊

English –
RWInc. Time!
As of 1st June, all speed sounds lessons are available from 9.30am. Those children in Set 2 and Set 3 groups have new words for reading. All sets have red words (tricky words) to practise. These are slightly further down the page.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

Miss Thompson’s group – Set 1 and Red Words 1
Mrs O’Hara and Mrs Harm’s groups – Set 2and Red Words 1
Miss Bunce, Miss Jobey and Mrs Neve’s groups – Set 3 and Red Words 2

If you think your child is very confident recognising and reading the sounds in the set they have been practising, we suggest they try the next set of sounds. For any children who are very confident with Set 3 sounds, there is a video called ‘Read Longer Words’ which they can practise.

This week’s story is……. ‘Sharing a Shell’ by Julia Donaldson

If you don’t have the story at home, you can watch it on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpJumAZx1t8

We hope you are enjoying this story! Miss Bunce and the children in school loved hearing this tale at the start of the week 😊

Today, we are going to be thinking about the bristle worm. In the story, the bristle worm is really good at looking after the shell and keeping it clean, to make it feel like home for his friends. How do you help take care of your home? Could you draw a picture and write a sentence (or more!) to tell us? For example, you might write:
‘I help at home by tidying away all of my toys and keeping my room neat.’
Or, you might learn a new job so that you could help around the house! Maybe your grown-up could show you how to set the table? Or how to hoover? We would love to see your photos!

Reading
Reading is an excellent way to help you to relax, as well as being an important skill to develop. See if a grown-up will read a favourite story to you, or you might be able to access some online stories to enjoy! This website has lots of books you can see and hear being read to you: https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/
Remember, you can select a reading book just like you’d get in school to keep reading books at the appropriate phonic level; this is outlined in an email sent the 27th April 📚
Happy reading!

🌈 Have a great day – hopefully see you soon! 🌈

Year 2

Thursday 2nd July

It’s Thursday, Year 2, and we hope that you are having a great week so far. What a treat for a Thursday! Mrs Bainbridge would like to read you a story today https://youtu.be/MoAAw0OkdYI

Let’s wake up today with some cosmic yoga – we enjoyed it so much yesterday! However, today we are going to do a cosmic yoga dance party! How exciting! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23VdtT0vQUY

Daily tasks –

Maths – For the past three days, we have been looking at mass. Today, we are moving on to how we measure and compare liquids. To do this, we measure capacity and volume. Capacity is the amount a container can hold. Volume is the amount it is actually holding.

For example,

The volume of this container is 60ml – this is how much water it is holding.

The capacity of this container is 100ml – this is the maximum amount the container could hold.

You may have seen some of the measures used – millilitres (ml), litres (l) or pints (pt). Follow this link https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/ and click on ‘Summer Term – Week 10 (w/c 29th July)’ and then ‘Lesson 3 – Compare volume.’ Remember to watch the video before trying the questions on your worksheet (which is attached here Lesson 3 – Compare volume). Good luck!

If you’re done, why not try and beat your time on Times Table Rockstars? It’s always good to practise your 2-, 5- and 10-times tables as you will use them in lots of different areas of maths, including measurement.

English – We are sticking with the theme of shoes today but this time we would like you to write an advertisement for some shoes. First of all, you need to design your own pair of shoes, trainers or boots. Draw these in the middle of some paper.

In your advertisement include the following information:

  • The name of the shoes
  • How much they cost (try to make people think they are getting a bargain)
  • A description of different parts of the shoes
  • Special features the shoes have – try to be imaginative.

We have attached an example of a shoe advertisement so you can see how to set your work out, feel free to magpie ideas Shoe Advertisement example. Also see some images below of some unusual shoes which might give you some ideas for your design. Imagine having shoes made out of Lego or having a built in mobile phone! Please share your advertisements with us!

Phonics – All phonics videos can be viewed from 10.30am by following this link:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

Join in with the speed sound lesson and the word time spelling lesson as well. Remember to tick or fix! Choose Set 3 sounds video if you have an orange, yellow, blue or grey reading book. If you have a green, purple or pink reading book, choose Set 2 sounds video.

There are videos added for reading red words too. For those who have a green, purple, pink and orange reading book, read red words 1. For those who have a yellow, blue and grey reading book, read red words 2. If you can’t logon, then you can find green words and red words at the back of your reading diaries.

If you do not read ‘Read Write Inc’ reading books, there is a video for you to watch all about reading longer words.

Maths:

Today we are going to begin as we do in class, with Arithmetic. Open the Flashback and complete the questions in your red maths book, the ANSWERS are also attached to self-assess your work and make any necessary corrections.

For the main lesson, we are revising how we add and subtract mixed number fractions. Open the True or False pdf and see if you can answer the question – is it true or false? The answer is on the second page.

Next, there is an informative video for you to watch using the following link: https://vimeo.com/413669555

which will help you complete today’s task. You can access the task by either opening the ‘add and subtract mixed number fractions’ PowerPoint and completing the questions in your red maths book OR you can open the ‘add and subtract mixed number fractions’ task pdf and print off the questions. When you have completed the task, open the ‘add and subtract mixed number fractions’ answers pdf and self-assess

English:

This week is SPaG week! There are 5 tasks for you to choose from. If you are in school you only need to complete 3 day’s worth of tasks – you can choose from any of the days. These are all SPaG areas you have covered in school before – great revision ready for secondary school! Please use your blue jotter to record your work 😊

Day 1 – Select the correct relative pronoun to create sentences with relative clauses. The instructions and an example are on the sheet. Please don’t forget to use a comma!

Day 2 – Recognising non-standard English. Look at the verbs to help you for this activity. For example: ‘I done my homework’ is non-standard English. It should be either, ‘I have done my homework.’ or ‘I did my homework.’

Day 3 – Determiners. A determiner comes before a noun and tells you something about the noun. For example: the number of something or who owns something. E.g ‘There were thirty children.’ Thirty is the determiner as it tells us how many children. ‘Our classroom was stifling hot.’ Our is the determiner.

Day 4 – Prepositions. There are 3 types of preposition: those that tell us the time something happened e.g before or at noon, those that tell us where something is e.g behind or under and those that are causal e.g because of or due to the fact. There are three activities to complete today and the answers are on the final sheet. If you would like to challenge yourself miss our activity 2 and only do 1 and 3.

Day 5 – Semi-colons. A semi colon is used to join to main clauses together that are linked to each other. A semi colon can often replace a conjunction. For example: ‘Mrs Moorhead likes dogs and she has one called Lola.’ We replace ‘and’ with a semi colon. ‘Mrs Moorhead likes dogs; she has one called Lola.’
